About the Role
In this position you will act on behalf of the Humane Society family of organizations by pitching stories to reporters, identifying pitching opportunities, researching media contacts, routing written material through internal review and arranging media interviews with subject experts. Increases coverage of the organization and its issues.
You will be responsible for:
* Working with the Media Relations Manager to pitch issues and events to reporters with strong knowledge of animal issues and how they can be placed in the media for maximum impact;
* Developing targeted media lists with strong knowledge of relevant reporters, media outlets and opportunities to position animal protection issues;
* Editing and routing press releases, advisories, letters to the editor, pitching stories and other collateral materials to the news media. Routing op-eds and letters to the editor to internal stakeholders;
* Responding to inquiries from news media. Suppling reporters with background materials and scheduling interviews with organization spokespeople;
* Developing relationships with relevant reporters, including speaking with them on the phone, having in-person meetings and using online tools such as Twitter to develop a rapport;
* Distributing press releases utilizing media database and distribution software to media outlets;
* Performing other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
