About the Role
The Humane Society International (HSI), an affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Cruelty Response Specialist for HSI, India. In this position you will develop and implement the strategy of the cruelty response department aimed to respond to animal fighting, end puppy mills, end dog meat trade and support animal cruelty legislation.
Responsibilities
Program strategy and implementation:
• Develops and implements the cruelty response campaign strategy;
• Provides expertise on animal cruelty cases in India and works with identified counsel on representing the organization appropriately;
• Works with counsel on identifying the scope of litigation needed against institutional and individual animal cruelty including, but not limited to illegal dog breeding, pet shop rule violations, and animal fighting;
• Develops and implements an outreach program to create awareness on responding to animal cruelty;
• Collaborates with the department of Government Affairs to develop political support to create and implement animal welfare policies;
• Works with stakeholders to develop legal studies on animal welfare policies regarding animal cruelty and/or related to companion animals;
• Identifies and collaborates with local animal protection groups interested in partnering with HSI/India on cruelty response;
• Trains campaigners and partner organizations on responding to animal cruelty cases;
• Oversees the implementation of projects by interns and volunteers;
Content development and documentation:
• Assists the Senior Director, Companion Animals raise funds for cruelty response work by providing technical expertise, attending meetings, and developing donor reports;
• Supports the communication department in the development of content by providing technical and other inputs for traditional, print, electronic and social media;
• Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Graduate degree or equivalent work experience required. Graduate degree in law preferred;
• A minimum of five 5 years of experience in animal protection work required;
• Comprehensive knowledge of animal law and the legal procedures in India;
• Ability to lead and guide staff to meet department and organizational goals. Strong knowledge of staff management practices. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff;
• Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day;
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
• Ability to manage issues requiring conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
• Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally, as needed;
• Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
